Eighty Mile Beach – Karratha

We tried to get on the road at a more respectable time today and left Eighty Mile Beach just after 8am. Port Hedland was our first stop today to fill up with fuel and check out the town. The salt works were pretty cool but I wonder how much salt just gets blown into the air.

We also passed by the enormously long iron ore train that was on the tracks. After a drive around the town, we stopped to get an early lunch with the boys enjoying kebabs.

On the road again and we came across a few really, really, really long road trains (60m long) which we were quite thankful to have our CB radio in order to chat to them before overtaking. Just as we came into Roebourne, there was a gigantic, 8.5m wide load that was about to make it’s way through the town so we were very happy we got through before it. The pilot vehicles had stopped traffic coming into town the opposite direction in order to allow it through as it was wider than the whole road!

We arrived in Karratha around 2pm but our room wasn’t ready so we went for a drive into town and got a snack (“G” and “A” didn’t have lunch earlier). We found a really nice bar, Blanche Bar, which served tapas so we ordered a couple of little plates to share which were yummy. We then headed to the Visitor Centre and up to the Tank Hill Lookout which offered an incredible view of Karratha and the Burrup Peninsula.

Back to our hotel and we were able to check in. We have interconnecting rooms so the boys think they’ve struck gold as they have a huge TV all to themselves. After unloading the car, we headed to the pool where the boys opted for a dip but it was far too cold for “G” or “A”.

Tonight we are going to head to the hotel restaurant for dinner and then have a relaxing evening no doubt watching a movie.
