Today was very much a “housework” day, catching up on washing and stocking up on groceries for the next leg of our travels.
After a sleep in and slow start to the day, we ventured into town first stopping at the Visitor Centre which is a very nice centre with lots of souvenirs for sale and a really well set out information area. Next we headed to the Jetty and Wharf which we aren’t sure if you can normally walk along but you certainly couldn’t today as works were being done on it.

Just around the corner were the Sculptures on the Marsh. We found 3 of the sculptures which are very impressive but read that there are more so we may have to go looking for them tomorrow morning as we’ve since discovered they are on the other side of the main road.

Next stop was the bakery to pick up some yummies for lunch and back to our cottage to eat and change over some washing. Once we were all fed and watered, we headed out to the Boab Prison Tree, Frosty’s Pool and Myall’s Bore. The boys were pretty impressed by the prison tree but didn’t think it would be very nice to be stuck in there!

Just a short way back down the Gibb River Road is the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre which is very, very well done and very informative. It has an interactive cultural centre and then a large art gallery and we all purchased new t-shirts to support the Junba Project which is a form of storytelling through song and dance. There is a huge festival happening on the 8th of July which I think would be pretty spectacular to see if you happened to be in Derby at that time, which unfortunately we aren’t 🙁
Off to Woolworths we went to stock up on supplies for the next few days as we are off to Eighty Mile Beach for a couple of days tomorrow. The rest of the afternoon was spent finishing washing, re-packing bags, cleaning out some of the dirt and dust from inside the car before cooking dinner and settling in for a night of relaxation and TV.
Interestingly, Satellite Boy was the movie on SBS World Movies tonight which told the story of an indigenous kid from Wyndham trying to save his home and finding his cultural roots in the process. We did have a little laugh though as the kid and his mate ride their bikes and then end up walking from Wyndham, hoping to reach the big town (aka Kununurra) however part way through the movie they end up in Purnululu which is well off track if you’re walking from Wyndham to Kununurra!!!!! Having just been to these places, it was nice to see familiar landmarks.
