Mataranka (Day 2)

Today began much like yesterday though we did have a bit more of a sleep in than yesterday. Once again, we hit Bitter Springs straight after breakfast for another morning of snorkeling and floating down the springs. Honestly, there are no words that do the beauty of this area any justice. We were treated to watching the turtles go about their daily business and a few schools of small fish swim by.

At lunchtime we decided to head back to our cabin for lunch. The fridge in our cabin isn’t super cold so we decided we’d better eat some of the food we had including the bacon and eggs. Everything in this cabin doesn’t really work quite right including the cooking facilities so the eggs ended up being scrambled in the microwave 🙁 Even washing the dishes here is a bit amusing with the plug not fitting very well and easily knocked out of place with every dish you move in the sink 😀

After lunch we headed over to the old homestead to check it out and find out a bit more about the history of the book and movie “We of the Never Never”. I think “L” is quite happy indeed with the living conditions that we have nowadays. After checking out the homestead we went for a little walk down to the Waterhouse River which is extremely close to the thermal pool …. it does not look like the place you would want to swim in, nor can you with all the croc warning signs around! The top bit of the water is quite clear and we could see fish and a little turtle swimming but the rest of the water looked rather murky, a perfect habitat for our snappy friends.

A long swim/float/relax in the thermal pool followed before everyone got a little peckish and we headed back to the cabin for some happy hour. We also needed to catch up on a bit of schoolwork so did some of that and had showers to head to the homestead for dinner (a repeat of the past two nights!!). Yummy dinners all round with the boys fitting in a tiny bit more schoolwork while listening to music before the Nathan “Whippy” Griggs show started. Even though it was our third night watching it, we were all drawn right in to the awesome spectacular that he puts on. Tonight, Riley even got on stage to have a go at whip cracking. As it’s now 10:15pm, I think we’d better call it a night as we are back on the road tomorrow.
