Adelaide – Kangaroo Island

This morning we were up and straight into the breakfast, check the room and pack the car routine. We left Adelaide around 9am and had a leisurely drive down to Cape Jervis, only stopping at one lookout on the way. A lot of information we’d read said that the drive takes a lot longer than the 1.5hrs estimated by most GPS’s so we left with plenty of time to spare. Turns out we made it in 1.5hrs so we probably should’ve stopped and admired the towns we passed along the way.

On arrival at Cape Jervis, we drove around the town before heading down to the ferry terminal around 11am. A little morning tea snack in the ferry terminal before loading the car and ourselves on. The trip over to KI was relatively smooth though “R” still went a little pale, probably wasn’t helped by the winding roads to get to Cape Jervis to begin with as he did declare on the drive down that he was “so over South Australian roads”.

After 45mins on the ferry we arrived at Penneshaw and drove a short distance up the road to find a spot to eat for lunch. We decided on the Penneshaw Hotel where, thankfully, we were served really promptly. “A” had a burger, “G” the fish and chips, “R” a cheeseburger and “L” salt n pepper squid. After lunch we headed straight to our AirBnB called Saltwater House near Pelican Lagoon to meet Dave our host at 2pm.

Oh. My. Goodness. Words cannot do justice to the beauty of this place!! More of the accommodation in a minute, first we had a good chat to Dave and then quickly unloaded the car then head to Kingscote for supplies. We picked up some food for the next few days as we passed a lot of roadkill on the roads here and are pretty confident that we don’t want to be on the roads at dusk especially given the very rural location we are in.

The AirBnB is a stunning little two bedroom setup with amazing views of the countryside. There is a bird bath out the front where the kangaroos come to drink in the evening so we have spent much of the late afternoon/eve, until it became too dark, watching the kangaroos and sunset. We have just lit the wood fire as it is a little cool this evening and are settling in for a relaxing night before we adventure around the island tomorrow.

    • Still lots of time to get to KI and I would highly recommend the digs. You could always hit up for a family holiday there – perhaps tell your son he needs to take you 🤣.
