Esperance & Great Ocean Drive

It was a rather overcast day today so we started off with a walk along the 800m+ Tanker Jetty with drinks in hand thanks to the Coffee Cat and Sir Juice which are directly across the road from us on the foreshore. “G” had a coffee as usual, “R” a hot choc and “L” a berry smoothie. I fear we will be making a daily visit to these establishments!! With drinks in hand, we strolled along the jetty past a few hopeful fisherman who were still only hoping when we left.

Back at the apartment we collected our belongings and headed off for our daily adventure. Today saw a quick stop at the Visitor Centre and to the local market shops nearby. Lots of handmade art and craft on offer but nothing that really took our fancy. “R” did pick up a little gemstone that he thought was super cool as it’s almost metallic looking.

On the road again we hit the Great Ocean Drive and spent the next few hours admiring the different coastal scenery along the way. The coastline in this area is absolutely stunning. In and out of the car a stack of times along the way to enjoy walks to lookouts, general bush walks and of course rock hopping on all the rocks that were accessible. The weather was actually really nice despite the clouds and occasional misty rain and we spent most of the day in t-shirts with jumpers/raincoats coming on and off as required. The last stop on the drive was Pink Lake which isn’t actually pink anymore.

38km of Great Ocean Drive over several hours later, we headed back to town to find a late lunch. We found the local bakery and tucked into some pasties and sausage rolls for lunch before heading on to the Woolworths to pick up some supplies (dinner, stuff to make sandwiches for tomorrow and water because Esperance water doesn’t seem overly desirable to some of our palates).

By now it was mid afternoon so we headed back to the apartment for a rest. “G” had a sleep whilst the boys did some schoolwork then had a play on their iPads. “A” headed off to the hospital for a review on her thumb as directed by the Albany ED doctor. There was quite a long wait after the obligatory RAT to allow you into the building. Pleased to report the thumb is healing really well, now just need to find somewhere along the trip between Esperance and Adelaide to have the stitches removed!!

Ouch but looking better

Once “A” returned from the hospital, she picked up the men folk and headed off to a “Mermaid Gallery” which is marketed as a store selling wares made from fish skins (fish leather). Must admit it was a bit of a disappointment as there was only about 10-20 items made of “fish leather” and the rest of the shop was just a souvenir/gift shop. We quickly moved along to the Cannery Art Gallery, which was small but did have an impressive exhibition of photography of large waves mid-break as well as some paintings and funky fish leather made back into artistic fish.

As it was now late arvo, we headed back to the apartment to settle in for the evening. The boys enjoyed another spa bath and we made pasta bolognese for dinner. After dinner is blog writing and TV time before hopefully an early night as we are all a bit worn out after our day of adventure.

  1. Ali – glad your thumb is improving. If you need a hospital for the removal of your stitches before Adelaide, there is Ceduna, Kimba & Port Augusta.
Great to see the rest of your trip is going well.

    • Thanks Glenys, we think we will be seeing the medical peeps at Ceduna. I (G) did offer but she thought a trained professional would be better!
