Coober Pedy (Day 2)

Happy Mother’s Day!!! Another amazing sleep in this morning meaning a very late start to our day. I was lucky to be spoilt with opal earrings and breakfast (Weetbix) in bed from my beautiful boys. Once we got going, we headed out to check out Crocodile Harry’s, an icon in this area and some memorabilia from the filming of a Mad Max movie out here. Let’s just say Crocodile Harry was a real ladies man with lots of women’s underwear in his crocodile nest and lots of carvings of naked female figures. “L” even remarked “is it appropriate for us to be here?”.

We didn’t spend too long looking at Crocodile Harry’s before we headed back in to town and to the Old Timers Mine and Museum to go for a self-guided tour of a mine which depicted how things were done in the olden days. It was quite interesting and good to see a complete dugout home – think the boys are happy with our home in Perth! After we explored the Museum and Mine, we spent a bit of time noodling in the noodling pit to see if we could find any opal. We found quite a few little shards which was cool. One of the ladies there had found a piece in that exact noodling pit only the day prior worth $250!!

Time for lunch so we went back to the main street and decided to try out the waffles place for lunch, they were okay and filled a hole. Across the road and we checked out the Umoona Museum which is actually a part of the SA Museum and included a number of fossils from the sea that covered the area millions of years ago.

Time to head back to our hotel for some schoolwork and a bit of a rest. Just before 4:30pm we headed up to the Big Winch to check out the 360 degree cinematic experience which was a really interesting documentary of the Explorer’s Way and Coober Pedy in general. The movie went for around 40mins and we had booked a table for dinner at 5:30pm so practically perfectly timed! We watched the sunset and enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and then an amazing dinner, this is definitely THE place to eat in Coober Pedy and I’m sure we’ll be heading back there tomorrow. Hot tip is to definitely book a table as it was fully booked tonight, though it was Mothers Day and there is a live band on Sunday’s so maybe this influenced the bookings.
