Port Augusta – Coober Pedy

This post is a day late! Yesterday we left Port Augusta about 9am to start our journey “up the middle”. The weather was kind to us and gave us a lovely sunny, but chilly, day to drive. On this first leg we passed numerous Army vehicles heading south. R & L waved to all and all waved back making their day. Our first stop was Woomera to check out the Military display. It was really interesting to see all the different missiles up close and personal.

Back on the road, past Pimba and the salt lakes which were pretty impressive. We had a good laugh on the drive today as there were two sets of grey nomads who had hired Britz 4WD’s and were traveling together in convoy. Every now and then we would cross paths with them (due to either them stopping or us stopping at view points etc) and they were always chatting on their CB radios, quite fun to listen to them but clearly they didn’t really know how to use them as we tried to communicate with them at one point and it was radio silence on their part 😀

Our next stop was Glendambo ….. do not believe the website for Glendambo Roadhouse which has clearly changed hands and even brand of petrol station!! As it was lunchtime and we knew there wasn’t much else to do on the road to Coober Pedy we decided to eat at the Woolshed (the motel/caravan park restaurant) for lunch. “R” and “G” enjoyed homemade sausage rolls, “L” had garlic bread and “A” enjoyed a sweet and sour chicken on rice. The atmosphere was a bit dull but the food was good so that’s the main thing.

Just out of Glendambo and you could see the damage from the flooding a couple of months ago, with still quite a bit of water on the sides of the roads. A smooth drive to Coober Pedy with only one wildlife interaction as two wild emus ran across the road in front of us.

We arrived in Coober Pedy and checked into our underground hotel. It’s ok, nothing flash but will do for a couple of days. We checked out the visitor centre and the town before heading over to John’s Pizza across the road for dinner. It is a VERY popular place, I’m glad we went “early”. We each enjoyed pizza for dinner which were really good and then headed home for showers and a night enjoying a movie in mum n dad’s big bed 🙂
