Victor Harbor – Port Augusta

Bitterly freezing cold. That sums up today nicely. The end 😀

This morning we decided to indulge in room service breakfast at the Country Club before hitting the road for the day. It was rainy and miserable outside and the second we stepped outside the door the coldness of the air took our breath away. We quickly packed up the car and hit the road for a short half hour trip to visit the d’Arenberg Cube.

This winery come art space is pretty cool, there is an altered reality museum, tasting floor, cafe and the funkiest toilets you’ve ever seen. We spent a good hour or so experiencing everything the d’Arenberg Cube had to offer and enjoying the Salvador Dali exhibit. If you’re driving past this area I would recommend a visit as it is far too hard to explain the uniqueness on offer. “G” enjoyed the wine tasting, which is complimentary after buying a ticket to the Cube and left with a bottle or two!

Back on the road for more horrible weather which I do not enjoying driving in. It pretty much rained non-stop, only altering in intensity. Through Adelaide we went where the rain was the worst and the hail set in for a short while. Needless to say, we didn’t really stop at all!! Once out of the city, the weather eventually cleared up and the rest of the day was mostly nice and sunny though still bitterly cold.

We had a quick pit stop at Port Pirie which looked like a really pretty little town before heading on to Port Augusta. There are some bridge works going on in Port Augusta itself which slowed traffic down immensely but we made it safe and sound to our caravan park cabin around 5pm. It is equally as freezing cold here so we settled in to our spacious, comfy cabin and made bacon and egg burgers for dinner and cranked the heater right up. Don’t think we’ll be seeing too many sights in Port Augusta tomorrow as we have a decent drive to Coober Pedy and there is a LOT of information about the crime levels in town here at the moment so I think a good night’s sleep and we’ll be on our way!

  1. When you push through to the NT, don’t overnight in Tennant Creek, it isn’t safe and youth crime is through the roof, believe me, you WILL NOT SLEEP at night, push on for another 25km to the Three Ways roadhouse, the cabins are basic but clean and it is all 24 hr so lots of movement around to distract local youths !!

Hopefully you are looking to visit Mataranka hot springs on your way to Katherine, well worth the visit, just don’t go at night……things that bite may lurk.
