Denham – Kalbarri

One of the “quirks” about our accommodation in Denham was a 9am checkout otherwise a $50 fee would be charged to your credit card, hence we were up and out of there by 8:30am! Turns out we weren’t the only ones keen to exit well before the 9am timeframe as most others that were staying were also hastily packing up their cars.

On the road and we see an Emu on the side of the road which made us slow down as we passed. Our first stop was Eagle Bluff where we enjoyed the amazing views along the boardwalk. Unfortunately we didn’t see any marine life playing in the shallows below but we did enjoy the amazing views of the cliffs and coastline.

Not too much further down the road and we stopped in at Shell Beach which is far less shelly and white than “G” or “A” remember it being. There is quite a walk over some dirt/shell combo before you get to the really shelly bit starting about 1.5m from the waters edge. We had a good play with the shells before deciding to hit the road again.

Our next stop was the Overlander Roadhouse to fill up with fuel and get “G” his morning coffee. After “R”, “G” and “A” all had a pit stop, we were on the road again, passing multiple caravans and a truck before “L” suddenly decides he needs a wee … urgh … all that traffic to overtake again just because he didn’t need to wee 20 mins ago when we stopped!!!! Anyway, we hit the road again after finding a rest area and overtook the same caravans. Then we came across the slowest driver on the roads, doing 75kmh in a 110kmh zone!! Needless to say, the road train that was behind said campervan, along with the caravan behind that, the commodore behind that and then us at the end were all getting very frustrated. So much so that the road train ended up overtaking on a double white line section!! Patience rewarded us all with safe overtakes and we were soon zooming along again.

We arrived in Kalbarri about 1pm and after a quick drive through town we hit the bakery for lunch which we ate on the foreshore. We then had a quick visit to the Information Centre before collecting the keys to our apartment. The apartment is quite dated and small but it’ll do for a few nights.

We spent the rest of the day relaxing and going for a walk before cooking dinner and chilling out for the night.
