Purnululu – Fitzroy Crossing

We had a slightly later start to the day compared to the past few days as we were in no real rush today. We hopped on the highway toward Fitzroy Crossing, stopping briefly at Halls Creek to fill up with fuel which was an experience in itself. So many locals hanging around the petrol station with little kids riding around on bikes between the cars, having a good look in the windows. Needless to say, we were out of there pretty quickly!

Back on the road, we skipped Mimbi Caves as some of the communities are not allowing people in at the moment due to COVID and the only tour to do was a 2hr tour which we weren’t even 100% sure was running.

We hit Fitzroy Crossing pretty early so headed out to Geikie Gorge, arriving about 1pm. There was a boat tour running at 2:30pm so we did a short walk and stopped to have some lunch before booking onto the tour. The Parks and Wildlife lady who was taking bookings said they only had 2 people booked on the 2:30pm tour however with all the “walk-ins” the tour ended up taking 27 people.

It was very warm in the sunshine on the boat tour but the Gorge was beautiful with lots of amazing landscape to look at and quite a few freshwater crocs to spot. The tour ran for an hour so just after 3:30pm we hopped off and headed back into the Fitzroy River Lodge which is where we were staying for the night.

After checking in and unloading our bags we had a relax then headed to the restaurant for dinner, yet another buffet but equally as delicious. There was an over 55s tour group along with a smaller group at the lodge for the night so plenty of people around. One thing we’ve noticed over the past few weeks is the number of packed tour groups travelling around and how the majority of travelers seem to come from Victoria.

Although we had heard lots of bad reports about Fitzroy Crossing and the crime in the area, we actually felt quite safe here, especially compared to Halls Creek!! We didn’t have a great night’s sleep though for no apparent reason so hoping tomorrow night will be better!
