Purnululu – Kununurra – Purnululu

This was the day no-one was really looking forward to. We got up early to once again enjoy the buffet breakfast before hitting the road. The drive out on Spring Creek Track took slightly less time as “G” was more confident in Barry by this stage and we knew what we were in for! We negotiated the nine water crossings out, which for Barry was not an issue. We did however see a Subaru Forrester parked up near the biggest water crossing which had been damaged the day we drove in. It attempted and had crossed the water crossing with a car that was not high enough (yep we made the right call not bringing Katie in), we also passed a tow truck on the way out.

After we got to the end of the Track, we were at the Bungle Bungles Caravan Park where we were to stay for the night. This is also the place that we had originally booked for 3 nights and were thinking we’d have to do a 4WD bus tour into the Bungle Bungles before we got an extremely lucky break with the availability of a 4WD and accommodation at Savannah Lodge.

We checked into our cabin even though it was wayyyyy too early, much to the disgust of the cleaner and some other woman who was cranky that “G” sped in the park (nearly impossible to go 5kmh!!), unloaded our bags and then hit the highway back to Kununurra to drop Barry off and pick up Katie. The drive up the highway was boring for the most part until near the end where a cattle truck had lost it’s last trailer and was lying on it’s side in the middle of the highway and then closer in to Kununurra was a massive bushfire right on the edge of the road which the fire brigade were desperately trying to get under control!

Safely back in Kununurra, we picked up Katie from the caravan park, filled up Barry and handed him back then picked up some groceries before embarking on the 250km back down the highway. We got back to the Bungle Bungles Caravan Park just before 4pm which was perfect as I don’t think I’d like to be negotiating wildlife on the highway much later in the day. We had a quick relax before heading to the Bungles Baravan for a drink and dinner which is always steak, sausages, barramundi, 3 salads and cake for dessert. It was really yummy food and we spent the evening chatting to an older couple who were on an adventure from Victoria to do the Gibb River Road.

Again, it was early to bed for all.
