After breakfast this morning, we headed into “town” to the visitor information centre which actually wasn’t helpful at all!! Just outside though there was a tree full of bats so we at least enjoyed watching them for a little bit. There is also a funny little replica castle just up the road.

Off we headed to Litchfield National Park with Wangi Falls our first (and furthest) stop. The falls are incredible to look at though you can’t swim at the moment as there is a croc trap set up for a saltie which has not vacated since the wet season ended!! We decided on the 1.6km, Grade 3 walk to the top of the falls instead. It was a bit of a tough walk with lots of stairs but the view at the top was impressive.

By this stage it was just after 11am so we decided to grab a sandwich from the cafe on-site before venturing on. We called into the Cascades however the Lower Cascades were closed so we hopped back in the car and went on our merry way again. Next stop was Tolmer Falls which again was just a falls to look at and not to swim at. A little walk to the lookout and we were on the way again.
Next stop was what we’d all been waiting for, Florence Falls. The boys were awestruck at the falls and being able to swim underneath them. They enjoyed it sooo much that we are heading straight back there tomorrow morning! We had a good swim at the falls, went under the waterfall more times than I can count and let the fishies nibble at our feet. The only downside was the 135 steps to get back to the carpark.

Shortly up the road is the Buley Rockhole which is actually a series of rockholes with small waterfalls connecting them. The boys quite enjoyed going over the waterfall into the next rockhole and climbing back up to repeat, again and again. We enjoyed quite a while at the rockhole before everyone was feeling a bit tired.
On our way back home we stopped at the Termite Mounds to look at the magnetic termite mounds which are quite different to the Cathedral Mounds. Really interesting to read about how these blind termites build their wedge shaped mound in a north-south orientation to regulate temperature inside.

Back at our resort, we went for a quick swim before again getting ready and heading to the restaurant for dinner. Now, we are settled in for a movie and relax after our energetic day!

One response to “Litchfield (Day 1)”
Glad that saltie wasn’t there all those years ago when we had Wangi to ourselves and spent most of the time swimming or sitting on the sand bank in the middle. You probably don’t remember that or the big monitor that had you and I stuck on a chair😬.
