Darwin (Day 1)

Everyone enjoyed a long sleep in this morning before we headed downstairs to enjoy our continental breakfast that is included with our room. After breakfast and everyone was ready to hit the town, we ventured out for a bit of a drive.

First stop was the Information Centre to get a few more ideas for things to do whilst we are in Darwin. Then we headed on a general drive around the city, stopping at Stokes Hill Wharf for a walk around. There is a really big ferris wheel at Stokes Hill Wharf which we can see from our room and it lights up in all sorts of colours at night time so it was nice to be able to see it up close …. though no one is keen to go on it as it looks like you would cook in the tiny carriages as they go around. Looks like there are a few good eateries though.

Next we generally meandered around the city and out to Mindil Beach before meeting Uncle Mark at Cullen Bay Marina. After a little walk around the marina we stopped in to a cafe for lunch only to work out that it was a 100% vegan cafe, so we quickly got up from our table and went elsewhere as vegan food wasn’t quite what anyone wanted for lunch! We went just next door to a lovely pub/bistro called Lola’s and enjoyed some burgers for lunch followed by icecream for the boys as it was included in their kids meals. We then spent some time feeding the fish our leftover chips before parting ways for a bit of a rest back at “home”.

After a bit of R&R for everyone before we caught up on some schoolwork, much to the boys disgust. Around 5:30pm we picked up Uncle Mark and headed to the Mindil Beach Markets which were absolutely pumping, it felt like the entire population of Darwin was there. We had a look at all the stalls and then bought ourselves some dinner from the food vans to eat down on the beach. “L” was very adventurous opting for baby octopus skewers along with prawn skewers. Down at the beach we ate our dinner and watched the sunset which was really pretty. Then we headed back through the markets, indulging in poffertjes and sorbet on the way back.

After dinner we headed back home, dropping Uncle Mark back at his apartment on the way. Back at our hotel, we decided to go for a night time swim in the pool which the boys were very excited about. After a refreshing swim, we headed back up to our room and the boys decided on a bowl of cereal each as clearly they hadn’t eaten enough today!
