Today we ventured out to the Mary River National Park to explore the sights. First we visited Couzens Lookout which is close to 50kms away from where we are staying along firstly a bitumen road and then a gravel/sandy road for the last 20kms. This area was really pretty as the river was flowing, the breeze was blowing and the lilies were out in their thousands. Still wouldn’t get too close to the shoreline though!!
Just down the dirt road a little further is Rockhole which is also where some tour boats leave from. Again, very similar in scenery to Couzens Lookout and really pretty.

Back on the road with a quick pitstop at Bark Hut for some petrol and to clean the windscreen so we could see properly again and we headed in the opposite direction to visit Corroboree Billabong. This is back to the typical billabong scenery of the area with much stiller water (aka more mozzies) surrounded by lilies. You can even rent a houseboat, but I’m not 100% sure how keen I’d been cruising around on the water at night with the highest concentration of salt water crocs around!!
Slightly further up the road is the Corroboree Park Tavern where we stopped in for lunch. The lady running the place is a real character and one of those types where nothing is too much trouble “love”. There were a few of the NT Parks folk here along with some Army folk – we think American as their cams were slightly different to ours – as there is a large Mount Bundey Military Training Camp nearby.
After lunch we headed back home for a relaxing afternoon with a bit of whip cracking and schoolwork for the boys plus a general run around the grounds. We had bought some 2 minute noodles as emergency meals and thought we’d have these for dinner however the boys really didn’t like them. Not sure how they’ll go one day when they’re poor uni students 😀 So, here we are at the Bark Hut for dinner again. On the plus side, the mobile reception and internet is great here so at least you get the blog on the day!!!
