Not very far to travel again today. We started out late from Jabiru with a look at the art galleries and to grab a coffee for “G”. R has now officially become an art collector (well he bought a small artwork from a local art collection).
Our first stop along Arnhem Highway was the Mamukala Wetlands where we walked out to a bird viewing area just jutting out over the wetlands …. a little scary as there were a few bubbles coming up, no doubt from some snappy friends underwater! A really pretty area though all the lilies had died off 🙁

Back on the road and our next stop was just over the South Alligator River where we hopped out to have a bit of a closer look at the river from the boat ramp. Here, the crocodiles decided to show their faces as they swam on by! There were also some tiny things swimming right near the edge of the mud, we weren’t sure if they were baby crocs or some random type of mud-skipping fish but we weren’t going any closer to find out!!

Not too much further up the road and we reached the Bark Hut Inn where we stopped for lunch. This is also the place that we will be eating dinner as unfortunately the restaurant where we are staying is closed and this is the nearest place to eat, lucky it was good.
After lunch we headed to the Mary River Wilderness Retreat where we are staying for the next two nights. Forced relaxation is on the cards here with limited mobile phone connection, no TV and plenty of space and wildlife to look at. It’s a really nice bush setting and we are looking forward to checking out the stars later on. We unpacked and then had a bit of a rest for the afternoon before heading back out to check out the rest of the park. We have spotted some Wallabies, Kangaroos, Feral Pigs so far but we do back on to the Mary River so sure there is some more wildlife there to see!!
We have headed back to the Bark Hut for happy hour, dinner and blog writing while we have internet access.

It’s a pity that so many places seem to be closed while you are there. Do you think it’s because it is early in the “ Grey Nomad”season or the effect of the last two years on tourism generally? Regardless you seem to be finding enough to keep you interested, and the scenery can’t close down👏😊😘
The main nature sites that are closed are due to National Parks not opening them up yet from the wet season. The Grey Nomads are in full force up here and it seems to be a shortage of backpacker staff rather than tourists that keep places closed otherwise. If anybody says they can not find any work and are willing to travel, then they have not travelled anywhere we have been!!
Accommodation backs on to Mary River eh? Lock the doors and hope no one sleep walks!!!!!😂. Snappies and feral pigs UGH😳
To answer the question you asked on facebook,
Heading to Coffs Harbour to catch up with the grandkids who will be there for a footy carnival, then north to Queensland to see more relatives and friends, south west back to South Australia before home to Albany. Should be home mid to late August.
So we won’t be catching up then till about August 😂. Safe Travels and glad you seem to be having a great time.
