We had a bit of a sleep in this morning! Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot on our agenda this morning as a lot of places in Kakadu are seasonally closed still, not due to re-open until June.
First up we went to the Warradjan Cultural Centre which is just up the road from Cooinda. It’s a really informative centre and one that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kakadu. The thing that “G” and “A” found most interesting were the stories told by different people giving very different perspectives of life after “whitepella” came.
After walking through the cultural centre, we sat and watched a couple of documentary style videos put together by the Kakadu Parks people, informing us more about the land, flora and fauna. The art of this area is extremely different to central Australia with a lot of the drawings formed by lines rather than dots.
We headed back to Cooinda for some lunch, “L” having his second wallaby slider, “R” opting for chicken and “G” for pizza. After lunch it was time to enjoy the pool for a couple of hours before getting ready for our Yellow Water Sunset Canape Cruise.
We headed to the bus at 4:10pm to be taken a short way down the road to hop on our Yellow Water Cruise boat. It was pretty warm out there today so we were getting a bit roasted whilst waiting to take off but once out moving on the water there was a bit of a breeze which helped. Our safety demonstration on board included the use of life jackets which were only for if we had to transfer from one boat to another because if anyone ended up in the water even the guide recommended you throw your lifejacket one way and swim your fastest in the opposite direction with pretty much zero chance of coming out alive!
Our cruise was incredible and Kakadu is certainly a place that pictures just can’t do justice to, definitely recommend you come and experience it yourself. We saw loads of crocs, birds and water buffalo and learnt a lot about the area.

We were also treated to drinks and canapes as there is currently a ‘Taste of Kakadu’ festival on. Our canapes included crocodile, buffalo, emu and barramundi and they were all pretty yummy. We watched the sunset and then headed back to the boat ramp to catch our bus back to the lodge.
Back at Cooinda, we were still hungry so stopped at the restaurant for dinner. “R” and “A” opted for burgers, “G” the barramundi and “L” his THIRD wallaby slider in 24 hours, guess he really likes them.
Despite the internet being a bit rubbish here, we decided we’d try our very best to get yesterday and today’s blog posts uploaded so fingers crossed they work!!
Addendum: The internet did NOT work well enough last night to upload the blog so we have to upload the past 3 days’ posts tonight as we finally have decent internet. I also forgot to mention that since hitting Mataranka and beyond, we have noticed a) about 50 billion mosquitoes, b) lots of cane toads and c) several wild dingoes.

One response to “Cooinda (Kakadu) (Day 1)”
Mozzies,Cane Toads and Dingoes? Not sure you are encouraging me to travel up that way guys. RACV resorts around the country are sounding more attractive🤣🤣🙈
