Mataranka (Day 1)

What an absolutely magical day! We started out by heading to Bitter Springs which is just a short drive away. These perfectly warm (32 degrees-ish) springs are crystal clear and just stunning. As there is a current, all you have to do is hop in at the start with your pool noodle and float all the way down to the end of the springs, climb out, walk back to the start and repeat.

We floated our way down the springs multiple times, half the time snorkelling to check out the amazing scenery below and half the time just blissfully floating. We saw multiple turtles of varying sizes which were super cool to watch. Thankfully, we didn’t see any of the freshwater crocodiles that inhabit the area!

On our way back to Mataranka we stopped for fuel and a “locally famous pie” from the servo. We all opted for the steak and onion pies and I have to say they were actually delicious. After eating our pies back at our cabin we put on a load of washing, practiced whip cracking then threw the clothes in the dryer before heading to the thermal pool for a swim. Once our timer went off we all headed back up to the cabin via the laundry to collect our clothes and generally hung out and relaxed for a little bit.

After a while, we decided it was time to hit the pool again which we stayed in until around 5:30pm before it was time for showers. Once everyone was ready, we headed up to the homestead to watch the live band and eat dinner before the nightly whip cracking show which again was spectacular. Tonight we all opted for the Pork Roast Special so all were happy to get some veggies.

Everyone was really tired by the end of the show so we all called it a night.

  1. Mataranka sounds like a place you could spend more time at. I think you need to come visit Leanne’s Emma for some whip cracking lessons. She is a whiz at it.
